35 Times Reggae Music Won An Award At The Grammys

3 mins read

There is a rich history of Reggae music at the Grammys. In 1985, Black Uhuru received the first Grammy Award for Best Reggae Recording. Seven years later it was changed to the Best Reggae Album award.

In 2002, engineers, mixers, and/or producers were also including in addition to the performing artists. According to the category description guide for the Grammy Awards, eligible works are vocal or instrumental reggae albums “containing at least 51% playing time of newly recorded music”, including roots reggae, dancehall, and ska music.

Reggae great, Bob Marley died before this genre was recognized at the Grammys. However, his children have done exceptionally well. Stephen and Ziggy have 13 between them, while Damian has 3 (4 in total, having become the first Jamaican artiste to win a Grammy outside of the Reggae category, copping the 2005 Best Urban/Alternative Performance award for the Welcome to Jamrock single.)

The Wailers have also won Grammys – Bunny Wailer has three (1990, 1994 and 1996) and Peter Tosh received one in 1987. Other artistes to win the reggae Grammy twice are Burning Spear, Shabba Ranks and Shaggy.

Ziggy Marley holds the record for the most wins in this category, with seven wins as of 2017.
